Winter heart health

To help make snow removal safer, the American Heart Association has compiled a list of practical tips:

  • Take frequent breaks during shoveling. Pay attention to how your body feels during those breaks.
  • Don't eat a heavy meal prior to or soon after shoveling.
  • Use a small shovel or snow thrower.  When possible, push the snow.
  • Learn the heart attack warning signs and listen to your body.
  • Don't drink alcoholic beverages before or immediately after shoveling.
  • Consult a doctor if you have a medical condition or do not exercise regularly.
  • Dress in layers to prevent hypothermia.
  • Spray the blade of the shovel with cooking spray so snow does not stick.
